Trend: Temporary housing is becoming increasingly popular

The terms "temporary living" or "short-term rentals" refer to housing concepts in which the definition of "home" develops into a feeling that can arise in different places rather than referring to a fixed location, such as a city or a neighborhood. The Zukunftsinstitut has been involved in trend and future research in Germany since 1998. With an excerpt from the "Home Report 2019" by Oona-Horx Strathern, a trend researcher in the field of futurology and architecture of the future, the Zukunftsinstitut presents modern living concepts.

Whether micro-apartments, serviced apartments, boarding houses or the concept of the house guardian, the areas of mobility, individuality and technology play a central role in the new living concepts. Different companies have developed concepts that address the needs of "digital nomads" as well as today's working world. For example, apartments are offered with flexible rental contracts and weekend commuters can find suitable accommodation on online platforms. On these, they are offered apartments or rooms at a lower budget that they can only use from Monday to Friday. Here they can also enjoy more privacy and individuality than in a hotel.

Micro-apartments are particularly popular in the serviced apartment sector. According to estimates, today's market share in the "temporary housing" sector will rise from around three percent to around ten percent by 2030. The residential concept of a "house guardian" is characterized by the fact that a temporary resident looks after a vacant property and is then allowed to temporarily occupy it in return. Nowadays, there are companies and portals that offer the service of house guardian placement. Mobile living, which combines living and working in a mobile home, is also becoming increasingly popular.
