Thesis paper: Health-promoting and sustainable urban development

The working group "Health Promoting Community and Urban Development" (AGGSE) of the German Institute of Urban Affairs (Difu) has developed a thesis paper on the topic of "Sustainable Urban Development". The recommendations for action elaborated in it are intended to support cities and municipalities on their way to health-promoting and sustainable urban development. The thesis paper identifies important areas that should be given attention in the design of future-oriented living environments.

In the undertakings and measures to design new and sustainable living environments, the DifU working group recommends seeking communication and cooperation with citizens in the development of urban planning measures. In this way, weak points in the system can be eliminated and health-promoting living environments (settings) can be created.

The thesis paper contains five elaborated topics and theses. The topic "Social change" deals with the discrepancy between the increasing gentrification of urban districts and the consequences of the housing shortage for socially disadvantaged people. Social justice, health promotion and environmental protection are addressed in the second thesis. The third thesis addresses the actors in urban development and urban planning, who are called upon to translate the recommendations for action into concrete strategies. The last two theses deal with the creation of a social, technical and environmentally friendly infrastructure. For example, the fifth thesis raises awareness of considering health-promoting urban development in a global context.
