Tips: Save energy when cooking

There are numerous ways to save electricity in everyday life. On the website of Elektrizitätswirtschaft-AG VERBUND, consumers can find useful tips on how to cook more energy-efficiently and save money in the process. After all, electricity consumption in households is particularly high in the kitchen, among other things when preparing food.

For example, it is important to always choose the right size pot for using the stovetops. If the pot is too large, the heating time increases unnecessarily. If it is too small, energy is lost. With the right lid, the cooking time is reduced almost threefold. It is also advisable to turn down the stove a few minutes before the end of the cooking process and use the residual heat of the stove top. The residual heat is usually sufficient to finish cooking the dish. This saves additional energy.

Likewise, care should be taken not to use unnecessary amounts of water. When cooking with water, care should therefore be taken to fill the pot for pasta, potatoes or rice only with as much water as is really necessary. Those who prepare their food in the oven do not need to preheat the oven, as is often recommended. The principle of turning off the oven a few minutes before the end of the baking time and baking with the residual heat also applies here. If you set the oven to hot air, the air in the oven is distributed more quickly than when using top and bottom heat. This allows the temperature to be set about 20 degrees lower.
