The topics of building and room acoustics play an important role, especially in residential buildings. In order to attribute a high quality to a building and to increase the well-being of the occupants, the provisions in the 2018 revision of the standard for sound insulation must be complied with. The "DIN 4109-1: Sound insulation in buildings" lists technical building regulations for building and room acoustics.

While building acoustics refers to the sound insulation of buildings, room acoustics refers to the quality of the acoustics within the rooms. Appropriate building acoustics are intended to ensure that occupied rooms are protected from penetrating noise outside the rooms. In addition to external noise, this also includes noise from other rooms and noise from technical building systems. In order to comply with health protection, the minimum sound insulation requirements stipulated in the state building regulations must be observed.

Optimal room acoustics are achieved when speech communication is flawless and reverberation time is limited. By using sound-absorbing systems, room acoustics can be optimally designed according to individual room requirements and for different purposes. In this way, the effect of sound-reflecting surfaces in buildings, such as those created by concrete, floor coverings or glazing, can also be counteracted and the room acoustics improved.
