Statistics: Heating with renewable energies is becoming increasingly popular

According to calculations by the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), a total of 67.2 percent of all newly built properties in Germany were heated entirely or partially with renewable energies in 2019. In figures, this amounts to 108,100 properties that obtained their energy in an environmentally friendly manner. The use of heat pumps and geothermal and environmental energy generation is particularly popular among German households. With a percentage of 47.7, heat pumps are gaining ground as a heating source.

Solar thermal energy (15.2 percent) and wood (13.8 percent) are also popular secondary energy sources. Wood, in particular, has become an important building material in energy production in recent years and forms an important source of heating in addition to solar thermal energy and environmental thermal energy. Compared to previous years, the number of renewable energy users has continuously increased (66.6 percent in 2018 and 64.6 percent in 2017), while the number of gas heating users has continuously decreased.

According to the survey, a total of 47.7 percent of owners and residents of new construction properties used gas for heating in 2017. Last year, the figure was only 41.9 percent. Other heat generators in the conventional energy sector are oil and electricity. Together, the so-called conventional energy sources amount to a percentage of 15.5 percent, according to Destatis.
