Code for a holistic and diverse building culture

In order to create diversity in cities and promote different building styles, the Federal Foundation for Building Culture, together with the Institute for Corporate Governance in the German Real Estate Industry (Institut für Corporate Governance in der deutschen Immobilienwirtschaft e. V. - ICG), has drafted a code aimed at the real estate industry. It is intended to encourage companies from the real estate sector, builders, project developers and planners, as well as owners and all those involved in urban development to create diversity in the design of living spaces.

Whether in the design of buildings, in infrastructure and urban quarters as well as in settlements, landscapes and public spaces, the drafted code serves as a guideline and commitment to ensure a lively building culture. At the same time, different building culture values and mutual acceptance in society are to be adhered to in order to also ensure economic success in the long term. The code contains a total of nine principles, which are divided into the areas of "attitude and values", visions and goals" and "competence and implementation".

The main principle of the code is the commitment to a holistic building culture. Thus, all building projects should be ecologically compatible and economically feasible as well as of high quality in the design of the buildings and their surroundings. The social anchoring and balance of the design and construction activities must also be ensured. Attitudes and values also include prudent project planning and appreciation of the built and cultural heritage. The common goals and visions include, for example, projects such as a resource-saving construction method or the promotion of stability in the field of urban planning and society. Design competitions and cooperations as well as solution-oriented collaboration are some points from the area of "competence and implementation".
