Interior insulation for listed properties

Not all types of buildings can be insulated from the outside. For example, it is not possible to apply exterior insulation to a listed house or to the facade of a half-timbered house. Often, owners of old buildings have to look for an alternative for insulating the facade if it is not possible to do so from the outside for structural or design reasons. Insulation from the inside offers a good alternative. The advantage is that the exterior appearance of the listed house remains in its original state and the property is still protected from heat.

If you want to install interior insulation in your house, you can choose between two insulation methods: capillary-active insulation or insulation by installing a vapor barrier. Both interior insulation methods are characterized by the fact that they prevent the formation of condensation. This is because when a house is insulated from the inside, moisture must not be allowed to get into the insulation material under any circumstances. If moisture penetrates the insulation and hits the cold exterior wall, this can lead to mold growth. Both methods prevent this. With capillary-active insulation, the moisture in the room is absorbed and released back into the room through capillaries without damaging or penetrating the insulation.

Interior insulation with vapor barrier prevents the penetration of warm indoor air into the insulation and the condensation of moisture. Both types of interior insulation are composed in the form of modular systems. They consist of several building materials that are optimally matched to each other so that condensation cannot form. The insulation materials can be made of different materials, such as mineral foam boards or natural insulation materials. The thickness of the interior insulation should be at least eight centimeters. When using insulation boards, make sure that they are glued over the entire surface to prevent back ventilation. An expert should both inspect the wall construction and carry out a quality check.
