Smart Home: Digital Health Monitoring and Virtual Care

In order to make everyday life easier for seniors and to increase their sense of home and life, digital smart home solutions also offer many advantages in the area of health monitoring. Thanks to modern technology, people in need of care in particular have the opportunity to live independently in their own homes for a very long time. Whereas not long ago numerous measuring devices were needed to measure blood pressure or blood sugar, for example, professional apps now combine all areas of data collection and storage in a single system.

In addition, apps offer monitoring of data in the form of graphs that give users clues on how to optimize their behaviors with regard to their health. This collected health data can be transmitted to the family doctor or nursing service with a click. For example, discussions with the nursing service or a check-up appointment with the family doctor can be conveniently conducted remotely. But that's not all: In the field of "virtual care", so-called AAL systems (Ambient Assisted Living) are on the rise. In addition to collecting data, AAL systems help users take medication or drink regularly, for example.

Small devices or robots are connected wirelessly to the smartphone or tablet and structure and monitor, for example, the intake of medication by means of light signals or sounds. Some devices function technically via facial recognition and are thus linked to the respective user. However, although technical assistance systems in the area of "virtual care" as well as developments in the e-health market are constantly being reviewed and refined, caution is advised: Consumers should find out exactly about the individual devices before making a purchase and check whether the device of choice is tailored to their particular needs.
