Barrier-free living: Homelift

Anyone who wants to stay in their own home in old age will sooner or later have to deal with the issue of barrier-free living. Especially in houses with several floors, a solution for climbing stairs must be found. In addition to classic stair lifts or platform lifts, owners also have the option of installing a home lift inside the house or on the outside facade. What many do not know: A home lift can be installed for as little as one square meter of space and can also be retrofitted.

Similar to passenger elevators in office buildings, home elevators can move up and down one or more floors. For this reason, home lifts are also called vertical lifts and are available in two types of construction. For example, owners can choose between a transport cabin with a self-supporting structure that is not inside a shaft or a transport cabin that is integrated into a transport shaft. Both variants are independent of the stairway, unlike stair and platform lifts. In addition, no complex conversions are required, because a vertical lift is relatively easy to install.

Depending on how many floors the vertical lift is to glide through and how many ceiling breaks are required for this, the costs are made up differently. The equipment of the lift and the load capacity also play an important role in determining the price. While standard models can be purchased starting at about 20,000 euros, the cost of custom designs ranges from 26,000 to 40,000 euros. In addition, there are the costs for an architect as well as a construction company. It is worth mentioning that some health or nursing care insurances as well as professional associations subsidize the purchase of a vertical lift with up to 4,000 euros. In addition, some banks also grant low-interest loans.
