Study: Community housing projects

Community living arrangements have both advantages and disadvantages. This is the result of the study "Families in Community Living Arrangements" conducted by the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences and the German Youth Institute (DJI). Thus, 60 percent of respondents are that this form of housing facilitates the compatibility of family and career.

In addition, the study shows that living arrangements can also be a good option in the event of changes in living situations. As an example, so-called option rooms are mentioned, which can be temporarily occupied, for example by grandparents. In addition, residents support each other, for example in doing shopping and repairs.

However, the study results also show that co-designing this form of housing takes a lot of time and thus also poses challenges for young families in particular, where time is tight. In general, residents of communal living arrangements should be open-minded and tolerant, according to the study, as the proximity also harbors potential for conflict.
