Real estate search: The majority surfs the Internet

In their real estate search, 70 percent of those who have ever been on the lookout for an apartment or house to rent or buy in the past used the Internet in part or exclusively. This is the result of a survey conducted by Bitkom Research, a subsidiary of the German Digital Association. The company surveyed around 1,000 people aged 16 and over in Germany.

Half of the respondents (52 percent) search on major real estate portals. Around a quarter (24 percent) look at private listings on the Internet. One in six (16 percent) browses specialized real estate platforms. One tenth (11 percent) uses social networks to search for real estate. In addition to Internet research, however, traditional channels are also used.

For example, 41 percent of respondents search for suitable housing with the help of an estate agent, 28 percent look for corresponding advertisements in newspapers, 18 percent request housing from municipal housing associations and 13 percent from cooperatives.
