Model project: GDR panel building is renovated for energy efficiency

Together with the Association of the Thuringian Housing Industry (VWT), planners have developed a concept for the energy refurbishment of mass-produced residential buildings from the 1980s. This is being tested in a GDR panel building owned by the Stadtroda housing association in Stadtroda, a small town in Thuringia.

Among other things, the GDR panel building is to be fitted with a new type of heat exchanger by 2023. This will return the heat energy from the bathtub, dishwasher or washing machine to the apartment via the heating system. In addition, a green facade is also planned, which will cool the prefabricated building in summer and at the same time serve as a residual water filter.

The Thuringian Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Nature Conservation is funding the project with 2.4 million euros from the Heat Energy Offensive. With this, it is supporting pilot projects for the heat transition on the way to a climate-neutral building stock. The aim of these and other measures in Thuringia is to achieve a "climate-neutral building stock" by 2045.
