Possessions: Owners happier than renters

Property owners in Baden-Württemberg are happier than renters. This is the result of Prof. Dr. Frank Brettschneider from the University of Hohenheim in a study commissioned by the Baden-Württemberg building societies. This shows that 71 percent of owners in Baden-Württemberg are satisfied with their current housing situation. For tenants it is only 52 percent.

For those surveyed, their property makes a significant contribution to their retirement provision (77 percent). They also benefit from creative freedom (73 percent) and independence (65 percent). These aspects play a much smaller role for tenants (old-age provision: 55 percent, creative freedom: 53 percent, independence: 41 percent).

In addition, more property owners than renters stated that they could withdraw and relax in their own home during the corona-related restrictions (87 percent). For tenants it was only 79 percent. However, the survey also reveals that many tenants are considering buying property (58 percent) but have not yet done so due to financial pressures or the risk of possible unemployment.
