Bertha Benz Prize: Renate Sachse honored

For her dissertation "Variational Motion Design for Adaptive Structures" (Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Stuttgart), Renate Sachse recently received the Bertha-Benz Prize of the Daimler and Benz Foundation, which is endowed with 10,000 euros. In the dissertation, she presents a mathematical method that can benefit not only those responsible for the construction industry, but also aerospace, robotics and medical technology.

The method can be used to calculate optimal movements for flexible structures. For example, in the construction industry, when deformable facade elements for buildings or retractable stadium roofs are to be designed. "This can be used to save energy, especially in the booming construction industry, where a lot of material and resources are consumed," explains Dr.-Ing. Renate Sachse.

With the annual Bertha Benz Prize, the Daimler and Benz Foundation expressly wishes to address women in engineering disciplines and support them in their professional careers. Only women whose dissertations have been rated "magna cum laude" or "summa cum laude", i.e. are considered an outstanding achievement or one that deserves special recognition, are eligible to apply for the prize.
