Heat: heating with renewable energy

In the future, heating systems are to be operated with at least 65 percent renewable energy. This is according to a press release from the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB). Presumably from January 1, 2024, owners of new construction or existing properties will have to comply when installing/exchanging heating systems.

The Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) and the BMWSB have jointly published the "Concept paper: 65 percent EE in the installation of new heating systems". This is to be discussed with the stakeholders concerned. In this context, the concept also includes questions on the sustainability criteria for biomass, the shortage of skilled workers, and interim solutions via temporarily rented gas boilers.

The background for the planned concept is the Ukraine war. According to the BMWSB, more than 80 percent of the demand for heat is currently still met by burning oil and gas, most of which is imported. In the building heat sector, natural gas dominates, especially from Russia. Interested parties who would like to take a look at the concept paper can download it free of charge from the website bmwsb.bund.de.
