Construction industry: Number of apprentices on the rise, but still in demand

Although the number of apprentices in the main construction trade has increased for the fifth year in a row, the Central Association of the German Construction Industry (ZDB) is calling on young interested parties to apply to a construction company. According to ZDB Managing Director Felix Pakleppa, many apprenticeship positions have not yet been filled, and there is also a shortage of personnel in the German construction industry.

According to Felix Pakleppa, in many companies, young people can pursue vacation jobs that can facilitate their entry into an apprenticeship relationship. With reference to the figures published by SOKA-Bau (the social insurance fund for the construction industry) as of the cut-off date of June 30, 2022, there is nevertheless cause for celebration.

"The number of apprentices in the main construction trade is rising for the fifth year in succession. Around 40,000 young people are currently undergoing training in the construction sector. This is 1.5 percent more than in the same period last year. Since 2017, the encouraging upward trend in apprentice numbers in the main construction trade has thus continued," says Felix Pakleppa.
