Energy prices: GdW calls for support for private individuals, among others

In view of rising energy prices, the Federal Association of German Housing and Real Estate Companies (GdW) is calling not only for a temporary moratorium on dismissals, but also for support for financially overstretched households in the form of a trust fund. However, the GdW stresses that this support must not be restricted solely to recipients with housing entitlement certificates, because according to the GdW, "households right into the middle of society are affected by the energy price explosions."

In addition to aid for private individuals, however, the GdW is also calling for liquidity assistance for socially oriented housing companies. This is because the latter now have to take out higher loans for the upfront payments they have to make to the energy suppliers for the warm operating costs and are thus getting into payment difficulties. According to the GdW, housing companies have already (as of mid-July 2022) incurred additional costs of over 650 million euros compared with the previous year.

"Socially oriented housing companies and their tenants are increasingly running into financial problems as a result of the energy price explosion. The protection against dismissal currently being discussed in the political debate is by no means a sufficient instrument to provide effective help here. In the end, this will only leave the tenants sitting permanently on the ever-increasing debts," says GdW President Axel Gedaschko.
