Annual statement: owners see need for improvement

Owners want more clarity and transparency with regard to their annual statements of accounts from homeowners' associations. This is the result of an online survey conducted by the association "Wohnen im Eigentum" (WiE). According to WiE, only half of those surveyed found the annual statements to be structured and laid out in an understandable and comprehensible way, and only 42% found them to be easy to understand overall. In addition, only 51% of respondents know how to check the calculations in their annual statements.

However, WiE also wanted to know from the owners how the annual statements could be made easier for them to understand. 56% of respondents stated that explanations, reading and interpretation aids and generally understandable definitions would be relevant to them. In addition, 86% of respondents consider a DIN standard for annual statements to be beneficial or necessary.

"The survey results show that many homeowners have a very strong interest in improvements - i.e. simplifications, unifications, standardizations - in the annual accounts," says Gabriele Heinrich, board member at WiE.
