Home loan barometer: Desire to own a home unbroken

Despite the sharp rise in real estate and land prices, Germans are still happy to invest in their own home and the number of loan agreements remains "at a consistently high level". This is the conclusion reached by ING Germany on the basis of the Baufi-Barometer. Based on the question "How does Germany finance", the construction financing data of ING customers from 2016 to 2021 was evaluated on an anonymous basis.

Among other things, ING Germany found that the average loan volume increased by 40 percent from 2016 to 2021, from EUR 251,000 to EUR 348,000. The highest loans were disbursed in Bavaria with an average of EUR 449,000, while the lowest were in Saarland with an average of EUR 236,000. The bank attributes this development to the rise in prices.

These and other results emerge from the mortgage barometer. ING Germany granted around 56,500 loan agreements in 2021 (up to the end of November). In 2020, the bank recorded around 56,900, in 2019 around 45,400, in 2018 around 52,300, in 2017 around 49,500 and in 2016 around 55,300 loan agreements.
