Construction industry: number of trainees on the rise, but they are still in demand

Although the number of trainees in the construction industry has risen for the fifth year in a row, the German Construction Federation (ZDB) is calling on young people to apply to a construction company. According to ZDB Managing Director Felix Pakleppa, many trainee positions have not yet been filled and there is a shortage of personnel in the German construction industry.

According to Felix Pakleppa, young people can take on vacation jobs in many companies, which can make it easier for them to start an apprenticeship. With reference to the figures published by SOKA-Bau (the social insurance fund for the construction industry) as of June 30, 2022, there is nevertheless reason to be pleased.

"The number of trainees in the construction industry is rising for the fifth year in a row. Around 40,000 young people are currently completing an apprenticeship in construction. That is 1.5 percent more than in the same period last year. The encouraging upward trend in the number of apprentices in the main construction sector has thus continued since 2017," says Felix Pakleppa.
