Garden: Build your own raised bed

If home builders want to create a raised wooden bed in their garden, on their patio or on their balcony, they can find tips on the "bauen.de" portal. First of all, 2.5 to 5 cm thick wooden slats (depending on requirements) must be purchased for the side walls as well as squared timber or posts for stabilization and coated with an appropriate protective glaze. The area for the raised bed can then be marked out with a cord and the posts can be put in place.

Further steps must also follow, such as planking the sides, attaching a galvanized grid to protect against voles and lining the raised bed with pond liner. Once all the relevant steps have been completed, the raised bed can be filled with different layers. Start with a layer of tree and shrub cuttings, followed by branches and bark mulch, leaves or grass cuttings, semi-ripe compost and mature compost.

When planting the raised bed, hobby gardeners should pay attention to an appropriate crop rotation. While plants such as tomatoes, cabbage and cucumbers can be sown in the first and second year, mid-season crops such as lettuce, Chinese cabbage and peppers should follow in the third and fourth year. From the fifth to the seventh year, weak growers such as beans, peas and herbs can then be planted. On the "bauen.de" portal, interested parties can also find information on which plants should be planted in the raised bed at the same time, as well as the complete construction instructions.
