In a study, the owners' association Haus & Grund Deutschland found that rents became more affordable for wage earners between 2015 and 2020. For the study, the owners' association compared the increase in wages with the increases in existing rents and new contract rents, among other things.
While wages rose by an average of 11.3 percent during the survey period, existing rents rose by an average of 6.0 percent and new contract rents by 6.6 percent, according to Haus & Grund. Existing rents became less affordable in only 4 and new rents in only 55 of the 401 districts surveyed.
However, the average gross wages of full-time employees subject to social security contributions were used for the studies. The association therefore concludes from its own research that government measures to improve the affordability of housing should focus primarily on single parents, pensioners and students.
