Digitalization: 30 test households wanted for smart home project

The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT is looking for 30 test households for the "SAM Smart" research project. The research project aims to improve the data protection and security of smart home devices. To this end, practical, user-friendly solutions are to be developed that provide users with an overview of their stored data and how it is used.

The Security Assistance Manager (SAM) is at the heart of the project. With the help of AI-based analysis methods, potential data protection risks are to be identified and new security solutions developed and proposed. User consent for the implementation of the solutions remains essential. Users can view their data at any time via a "privacy dashboard". Machine learning is intended to help improve the devices' sensors without jeopardizing the anonymity of users.

The test households will be part of a realistic "living lab" for around two years. In particular, test households from North Rhine-Westphalia and the wider Rhineland are still being sought. The knowledge gained from the project should not only enrich private use, but also be transferred to commercial and public areas. Project partners such as universities and IT security companies are supporting the initiative with their expertise.
