Energy prices: GdW calls for support for private individuals, among other things

In view of rising energy prices, the Federal Association of German Housing and Real Estate Companies (GdW) is not only calling for a temporary moratorium on layoffs, but also for support for financially overstretched households in the form of a trust fund. However, the GdW emphasizes that this support must not be limited to recipients with housing entitlement certificates alone, because, according to the GdW, "households right up to the middle of society are affected by the energy price explosions".

In addition to aid for private individuals, the GdW is also calling for liquidity assistance for social housing companies. This is because they now have to take out higher loans for the advance payments they have to make to energy suppliers for warm operating costs and are therefore experiencing payment difficulties. According to the GdW, housing companies have already (as of mid-July 2022) incurred additional costs of over 650 million euros compared to the previous year.

"Socially oriented housing companies and their tenants are increasingly facing financial problems due to the explosion in energy prices. The protection against dismissal currently being brought into play in the political debate is by no means a sufficient instrument to provide effective help here. In the end, tenants will only be left with ever-increasing debts," says GdW President Axel Gedaschko.
