Trainees and students can also receive the heating allowance. This was recently decided by the cabinet. In a FAQ, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) now outlines the requirements they must meet.
For example, trainees who have received a vocational training allowance or training allowance and no longer live with their parents automatically receive the heating allowance. Students who received BAföG for at least one month in the period from October 2021 to March 2022 can also receive the heating allowance. However, they must submit an application for this. The application can be submitted to the relevant offices from June 1, 2022 to December 31, 2022. However, the responsible offices have yet to be determined by the federal states.
While the heating cost subsidy for trainees and students amounts to a one-off lump sum of 115 euros, housing benefit households receive a one-off heating cost subsidy depending on the size of the household. This amounts to 135 euros for one person, 175 euros for two people and 35 euros for each additional person. The heating cost subsidy is intended to cushion the impact of increased energy prices, which are a particular burden on lower-income households.
