Innovation: cable robots for construction sites

Researchers from the University of Duisburg-Essen (UED), the Institute for Applied Construction Research Weimar and the Kalk-Sand Research Association have developed a new type of rope robot. They spent two years working on it.

The result is a cable robot that can build a storey of standard sand-lime bricks within a few hours. It can also move bricks, insert lintels and apply mortar. The cable robot works using a BIM model. During this digital process, data is sent to the robot.

According to UED, the cable robot is not intended to make people superfluous in the construction industry, but could help to counteract the shortage of skilled workers. The project is funded by the Ministry of Regional Identity, Communities and Local Government, Building and Gender Equality of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
