Model project: GDR prefabricated building undergoes energy-efficient refurbishment

Together with the Thuringian Housing Association (VWT), planners have developed a concept for the energy-efficient refurbishment of mass-produced residential buildings from the 1980s. This is being tested in a prefabricated GDR building belonging to the Stadtroda housing association in Stadtroda, a small town in Thuringia.

Among other things, the GDR panel building is to be fitted with a new type of heat exchanger by 2023. This will return the heat energy from the bathtub, dishwasher or washing machine back into the apartment via the heating system. A green façade is also planned, which will cool the prefabricated building in summer and also serve as a residual water filter.

The Thuringian Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Nature Conservation is funding the project with 2.4 million euros from the heat energy campaign. With this, it is supporting pilot projects for the heating transition on the way to a climate-neutral building stock. The aim of these and other measures in Thuringia is to achieve a "climate-neutral building stock" by 2045.
