The German Quality Association for Furniture (DGM) now advises tenants and owners on how to be environmentally conscious when buying furniture. It has three tips for interested parties. Firstly, tenants or homeowners can pay attention to good furniture quality and choose durable, healthy and environmentally friendly products. According to the DGM, the RAL quality mark "Golden M" indicates this.
Secondly: When buying furniture, care can be taken to ensure that it is made of wood, with a high proportion of solid wood being an advantage. The DGM explains the reason for this as follows: "[...] In this country, the material from the forest comes from sustainable forestry: for over 300 years, no more wood may be harvested in Germany than can grow back." Sustainable forestry offers the potential to store climate-threatening greenhouse gases.
Thirdly, seals such as "Climate-neutral furniture production" or "Climate-neutral furniture" allow tenants and owners to recognize furniture that is also considered climate-neutral beyond production. Only companies that proceed according to a three-step principle are awarded seals. First, they must calculate their company's carbon footprint, then reduce their emissions and finally offset unavoidable emissions by purchasing climate protection certificates.
