Photovoltaics: More color

Colored photovoltaic modules can now not only be a visual highlight, but also offer high efficiency. To this end, the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE has developed a new technology, MorphoColor® technology. This makes it possible to color PV modules in different colors without significantly impairing the efficiency of the module, as was previously the case.

The new technology is based on a special structure in which a layer is combined with a substrate. As a result, only a narrow bandwidth of light is reflected and the remaining sunlight can pass through unhindered. The colored photovoltaic modules can also be used for building-integrated colored solar thermal collectors or photovoltaic collectors.

The Swiss company Megasol Energie AG has acquired the license for this new technology. According to those responsible, the technology opens up new possibilities in areas such as monument protection. For example, colored PV modules can now be aesthetically integrated into building facades and roofs. This increases the design freedom of architects.
