Politics: Alliance of associations calls for more money for senior-friendly conversions

Several associations are calling on politicians to continue the KfW grant program "Age-appropriate conversion" 455-B with a funding volume of at least 150 million euros per year in the 2022 financial year. The associations criticize the fact that "the current government draft for the 2022 federal budget [...] no longer contains any funds for KfW grant funding for the age-appropriate conversion of residential buildings and apartments". According to the associations, there will be a high demand for age-appropriate conversions in the future.

So far, only 1.5 percent of homes in Germany are barrier-free. However, according to a study conducted by the Institute for Housing and the Environment (IWU) on behalf of KfW, there will be a shortage of around two million age-appropriate homes by 2035. The alliance of associations is therefore calling on politicians to step up their efforts with regard to age-appropriate housing, barrier removal and increased funding for the KfW program.

According to the associations Wohnen im Eigentum, the Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft der Seniorenorganisationen, the Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft Wohnungsanpassung, the Verband Wohneigentum, the Vereinigung Deutsche Sanitärwirtschaft and the Zentralverband Sanitär Heizung Klima, the budget for the funding program was used up after just a few months in recent years. This posed particular difficulties for homeowners' associations, as hardly any owners' meetings could be held until then. Since then, many people have been waiting for new funds in order to be able to start renovation work.
