Real estate search: the majority surf the Internet

When searching for a property, 70% of those who have looked for an apartment or house to rent or buy in the past have used the internet either partially or exclusively. This is the result of a survey conducted by Bitkom Research, a subsidiary of the German Digital Association. The company surveyed around 1,000 people aged 16 and over in Germany.

Half of those surveyed (52 percent) search on major real estate portals. Around a quarter (24 percent) look at private listings on the Internet. One in six (16 percent) browse specialized real estate platforms. A tenth (11 percent) use social networks to search for properties. In addition to internet research, traditional methods are also used.

For example, 41% of respondents search for suitable housing with the help of a real estate agent, 28% look for corresponding advertisements in newspapers, 18% enquire about housing with municipal housing associations and 13% with cooperatives. Further information, including on the tools that real estate seekers would like to see in online advertisements, can be found at bitkom.org.
