Spatial development: these are the challenges

The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine has a direct impact on spatial development in Germany and Europe. It has an impact on the supply of energy and raw materials and raises questions about the resilience of settlement structures and the protection of critical infrastructure. The current issue of the specialist journal IzR published by the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) deals with the topic "Turning point - New demands on spatial development".

"With the turnaround, the demands on land use in Germany are increasing, and saving land is likely to become much more challenging," says Dr. Peter Jakubowski, Head of the Spatial and Urban Development Department at the BBSR. In addition to land for renewable energies and energy networks, additional land is needed for industry, commerce and housing. The expansion of services of general interest and technical infrastructure is also necessary. Spatial planning must control changes and balance private and public interests.

The articles in the IzR issue deal with approaches to strengthening the resilience of regions to external events and shaping a sustainable future. The eJournal of the IzR issue is available online from Franz-Steiner-Verlag. Interested parties can also order the journal in print for 19 euros (including postage) by emailing service@steiner-verlag.de or requesting it at bbsr.bund.de.
