Solid wood furniture: how to clean it

Furniture surfaces should also be cleaned during spring cleaning. However, there are a few things to bear in mind when cleaning solid wood furniture in particular. The Initiative Pro Massivholz points this out. "Aggressive cleaning agents should be avoided, especially for solid wood surfaces, and water should be used sparingly," says Andreas Ruf, Managing Director of the Initiative Pro Massivholz (IPM).

A soft cotton cloth should be used for cleaning. This should be wet with water beforehand, but only until it is damp. The solid wood surface can then be cleaned with this in the direction of the grain. For heavier soiling, a soft household or table sponge - in combination with neutral soap - can also be used.

The IPM advises against using a dishwashing sponge - the scratchy surface could cause damage to the solid wood furniture. According to IPM, after cleaning oil or wax surfaces, a follow-up treatment is required: the surface should be resealed with a suitable oil or wax. According to IPM, solid wood is nevertheless rather easy to care for. It has an antistatic effect and should therefore not attract dirt and dust as much as other materials.
