A good 52 percent of homes in Germany are heated with natural gas. This is according to the 2021 consumption data study by energy service provider Techem. The study analyzed data on final energy and water consumption as well as the costs for heating and hot water from 2.1 million German homes in around 176,000 apartment buildings.
The study also examined more than 90,000 currently issued energy performance certificates. It was found that a third of heating systems are more than 25 years old and therefore "inefficient" according to Techem. According to Techem, measures such as highly automated heating system operation, continuous heating monitoring and optimized operational management can increase the efficiency of conventional heat generation in existing buildings by around 15 percent.
Optimum building insulation also offers potential energy savings of 30 to 50 percent. In addition, tenants can also contribute to saving energy by adopting the right ventilation behavior, thereby reducing consumption by 10 to 15 percent. "In times of the gas crisis and in view of the necessary decarbonization of existing buildings, all market participants must come together and jointly develop energy efficiency solutions," says Matthias Hartmann, CEO at Techem.
