Heat: Heating with renewable energy

In future, heating systems are to be powered by at least 65 percent renewable energy. This is according to a press release from the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB). It is expected that from January 1, 2024, owners of new or existing properties will have to comply with this when installing/replacing heating systems.

The Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) and the BMWSB have jointly published the "Concept paper: 65% EE for the installation of new heating systems". This is to be discussed with the relevant stakeholders. In this context, the concept paper also includes questions on the sustainability criteria for biomass, the shortage of skilled workers and interim solutions using temporarily rented gas boilers.

The background to the planned concept is the war in Ukraine. According to the BMWSB, over 80 percent of heating demand is currently still met by burning oil and gas, most of which is imported. In the building heating sector, natural gas dominates, especially from Russia. Anyone interested in viewing the concept paper can download it free of charge from the website bmwsb.bund.de.
