Heat loss: Consumer advice center gives tips on installing new windows

If owners want to renovate their façade, they can also install new doors and windows at the same time. Martin Brandis, energy expert at the consumer advice center, advises this. The reason for this is that heat can be lost through old windows, for example. According to the consumer advice center, the heat loss factor (UW value) for old windows is 3.0 or more and therefore exceeds the statutory minimum requirement of a UW value of no more than 1.30. If owners want to benefit from federal subsidies, the UW value may only be 0.95, according to the consumer advice center. For front doors, the heat transfer coefficient (UD value) may not be higher than 1.30 to qualify for a federal subsidy.

According to Martin Brandis, owners can not only save energy by installing new windows and doors, but also benefit from other advantages. For example, windows can be chosen that provide sound insulation or burglary protection. Sun protection, preferably fitted from the outside, can also counteract the brightening up of rooms. The consumer advice center points out that windows on the first floor should be particularly secure and have resistance classes RC2 or RC3.
