Life: Childproofing your home

Babies become mobile in their first year of life and begin to explore their surroundings. It is therefore important to make the nursery and home childproof in good time. According to the German Furniture Quality Association (DGM), parents can look out for the RAL "Golden M" quality mark when buying furniture. This ensures that the furniture is child-safe and tested for harmful substances.

To minimize the risk of injury, parents should identify potential danger points such as edges, sockets and windows and take the necessary safety measures if necessary. For example, they can fit protective caps to furniture corners and safety locks to drawers and cupboard doors, thereby significantly reducing the risk of injury to their child.

"Child-friendly home furnishings must not only create a safe living environment for the first few years, but also protect the environment and climate for future generations, from production through the entire life cycle to recycling," says Jochen Winning, Managing Director of the German Furniture Quality Association (DGM). Children's furniture with the RAL quality mark can therefore also be passed on to family and friends as soon as the first child has outgrown it.
