A bio-inspired microphone that could revolutionize speech recognition in smart home applications has recently been developed by Ilmenau University of Technology together with research partners. The microphone mimics the human ear and thus improves speech recognition in noisy environments. This technology could make overall acoustic systems consisting of a microphone and speech recognition more efficient and energy-saving in the future.
Voice recognition systems such as Alexa or Siri have already made great progress. However, according to the researchers, they reach their limits in noisy environments such as train stations, restaurants or streets. The bio-inspired microphone from TU Ilmenau makes it possible to precisely recognize and process voice commands even in such environments. It mimics human hearing, which can hear individual voices even in noisy environments.
The bio-inspired microphone offers many advantages. It enables improved voice control of devices such as cell phones, alarm clocks or various smart home applications. In addition, the innovative technology ensures less energy consumption and therefore also cost savings. TU Ilmenau is working together with its research partners on the further development and implementation of prototypes of the microphone.
