If a house has a chimney, it is possible to install a chimney cover. A chimney cover has many advantages. It provides the chimney with a protective function, for example, from sooting and from rain. It also protects against birds and bird nests nesting in the chimney and prevents the roof from being damaged by flying sparks. If the house is located near the mountains, it also serves to drive downdrafts into the chimney. In addition, it regulates and optimizes the draft in the chimney and visually enhances the house.
A chimney sweep will provide information on when it is worth installing a cover and which marialies are particularly suitable for this. While chimney covers made of copper and stainless steel are well suited for a cover, especially because of their corrosion resistance, a cover made of plastic or wood is out of the question because the materials are not fireproof. Even though a chimney cover is usually permit-free, it must be possible to remove or open the cover so that the chimney can be cleaned and serviced by the chimney sweep.
There are three different molle of a chimney cover: a rain hood, a Meidinger disc and a Napoleon hood protect mainly against envy blow. A rain hood made of sheet steel is the cheapest option and has the shape of a cone. While a rain house can be purchased for as little as 15 euros, a Meidinger disc costs 30 euros and more. The flat cover disc is placed horizontally over the fireplace and looks classic and functional. The most expensive variant is the Napoleon hood. It is characterized by its curved shape, it is often attached with elaborately worked metal pieces and costs from 70 euros.
