Due to climate change, there will be more and more extreme weather situations in the future, such as hail, heavy rain, winter storms and even earthquakes, floods and forest fires. In order to assess and reduce the risk of damage to real estate, the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) has developed the web tool "GIS ImmoRisk Naturgefahren". This tool is intended not only to identify risks, but also to help prevent damage in advance through structural measures.
The BBSR tool was developed for public and private developers as well as for private owners. The German Weather Service, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and other partners from science are involved in the development of the web tool. By entering object-related data, expected risks and damages can be estimated under consideration of climate risks. However, there is still a lack of area-wide data, which is why forecasts cannot be made for all weather situations.
The web tool can already provide detailed statements and forecasts on risks and damage to real estate caused by hail, winter storms, heat and heavy rain. An area-wide risk assessment of the expected damage to real estate caused by floods, snowstorms, earthquakes and lightning is currently still being worked on. For this reason, the web tool "GIS ImmoRisk Naturgefahren" (GIS Natural Hazards Risk) is constantly being further developed, because the damage to real estate caused by heavy rain, storms and hail in Germany alone already amounts to several billion euros.
