Tips: Avoid heat in the home and save energy

Before summer arrives in Germany, it is advisable to think about how you can protect your home and yourself from the heat while remaining climate-friendly. The non-profit consulting company co2online mbH presents eight energy-saving tips on its website that reduce both electricity consumption and temperatures in the home.

For example, in households that do not have external sun protection, roller blinds and venetian blinds can be installed on the windows. These should be kept closed throughout the day. Proper ventilation also plays an important role in preventing the hot outdoor temperatures from reaching the interior. Therefore, ventilation should take place primarily at night and in the early morning, when the outside temperatures are at their lowest. Constantly open windows should therefore be avoided. Those who own a ventilation system should check whether it can be retrofitted with a geothermal heat exchanger.

Cold water not only provides welcome cooling in summer, but also leads to electricity savings. Those who take cold showers do not heat the shower water. Thanks to modern cold detergents, hot water in the washing machine can also be dispensed with when doing laundry. Energy is saved with an eco-wash cycle and economy program. The same applies to the dishwasher. Energy-efficient refrigerators with energy efficiency class A+++ not only consume fewer kilowatt hours than old appliances, but also emit less heat into the kitchen. All other technical appliances in the household should not consume energy unnecessarily in standby mode and generate heat, but should be switched off with the help of modern power strips when they are not in use.
