The study "Opportunities and risks for the German heating industry in global competition" by PricewaterhouseCoopers GmbH Wirtschaftsprüfungsgesellschaft (pwc), published in June 2020 on behalf of the Bundesverband Wärmepumpe e. V. (BWP), aims to promote the heating turnaround more strongly in the field of energy transition. Particularly in times of the Corona crisis, when the government is handing out rescue packages worth billions to stabilize the economy and jobs, BWP's study aims to make clear to policymakers and political decision-makers how important measures to promote the heating turnaround are in order to achieve the energy turnaround and climate targets.
While measures for the generation of renewable energies for power generation are already on the rise, there is still a lot of work to be done in the area of heating, which is obtained from the ground or water. For this reason, the study includes nine important topics with recommendations for action for policymakers in order to give the heat transition an important place in the area of climate policy as well as in the state subsidy system.
These include, for example, measures for reducing taxes on heat pump electricity, standardizing and simplifying different approval procedures in the federal states, or optimizing the use of heat pumps in connection with building insulation. This would also be able to counteract the renovation backlog in Germany. The first part of the study also describes the use of heat energy and measures to promote the energy transition in Asia, Scandinavia and the USA, and makes an international comparison of Germany's place on the global heating market.
