The comparison portal Verivox provides tips on its website on the subject of water consumption and explains how water costs are made up. When calculating the water costs, Verivox refers to calculations of the Federal Statistical Office. According to this, the price of a cubic meter (1,000 liters) of drinking water is about two euros. Thus, one liter of drinking water costs an average of 0.2 cents.
However, it should be mentioned that the cost of drinking water differs from state to state and in municipalities. Reasons for the different pricing are the costs for the intensity of maintenance work of the pipeline networks and the length of the water pipes. Likewise, water quality and origin play a decisive role. The total price of the water costs consists of a basic fee as well as the actual consumption. The amount of the basic charge depends, for example, on the number of residential units or the design of the water meter. A labor charge is also calculated on the actual water price.
On average, a single-person household consumes 125 liters of water per day. Since water costs can only be reduced within the range of one's own consumption, consumers should consider a few behavior patterns. Water consumption can already be minimized with a single-lever mixer for the sink or a low-flow shower head. Consumers should also shower rather than bathe, turn off the water when brushing their teeth and use a stop function for flushing the toilet.
