Homeowners who want to do paving work on their property themselves can get good results with a little skill. Whether the paving is a courtyard entrance to the garage or a walkway to the house, one of the basic tasks in paving is to compact the subsoil. This is because if paving stones are laid on soil that is not sufficiently compacted, the surface will sag and the work will have to start all over again.
First, however, some preliminary work has to be done. If there are cables in the subsoil along the future paved path, they must be laid. Just like drains, sewer pipes or a drainage channel. With so-called vibrating plates, the ground must be sealed piece by piece. The height of the base layer depends on the purpose for which the paved path is laid. If it serves as a pedestrian path, a height of 30 cm is sufficient. In case of a car garage entrance, the base course should be 40 cm high. In this case, the procedure should be performed twice.
Then, around the area is placed a so-called curb. These curbs border the paved area and should be sized so that they are later about one centimeter higher than the paved path. The curbs are set in the earth-moist, frost-free soil. The delineated area is filled with paving gravel or crushed sand. This process is called bedding. Then, with the help of straightening laths, the surface is made smooth. On this, the paving stones can be laid in the desired pattern and grouted with washed sand or crushed sand. Finally, the pavement is compacted again with the vibratory plates.
