New EU energy labels as of March

New guidelines for the EU energy label will apply from March 2021. This means that electronic devices will be newly classified into energy efficiency classes and labeled with the appropriate energy label. The background to this is that the current classification into energy efficiency classes is only of limited significance, as many electrical appliances have achieved efficiency improvements very quickly in recent years and most products are currently in the upper energy efficiency classes.

To enable consumers to better assess how energy-efficient an appliance actually is, the EU has decided to revise the classification of energy classes and to assign all products to efficiency classes A to G. This also means that the energy label will no longer mention energy classes A+++ and A++. This also means that the energy classes A+++, A++ and A+ will no longer be mentioned on the new energy label. This means, for example, that an energy-saving washing machine, which previously had an energy label of A++, would be classified as energy class B under the new system. In addition, each label will include a QR code and pictograms that provide further information about the appliance and its consumption.

Products with the previously applicable energy efficiency scale may still be sold until November 2021. Initially, electrical appliances such as refrigerators and freezers, washing machines and dryers, dishwashers, televisions and the like will be equipped with the new EU energy label. Starting in September 2021, light sources will be reclassified and placarded. This will be followed by all other appliances and products, with the aim of completing the changeover by 2030.
