Even though it can be assumed that the home office boom that emerged as a result of the Corona crisis will continue to be integrated into everyday working life or even expand in the future, recent evaluations by the Institute of the German Economy (IW) show the opposite. According to the survey results from more than 1,200 participating companies, only 6.4 percent of companies plan to give up some or even all of their office space and have their workplaces moved home.
The majority of these are companies with more than 250 employees. These include, for example, law firms, auditors or consulting companies. But here, too, the proportion of companies is rather small. For around two-thirds of the companies surveyed, the transition to a home office is merely a temporary solution. On the one hand, they prefer their employees to be present in the office. For another, a fixed workplace in the office is stipulated in many employment contracts.
The plans even go so far as to ensure that previously unused office space is not sold or given away, but rather converted and expanded. More space for communication and exchange is to be created in these areas and from open-plan offices. This was stated by around 17 percent of the companies surveyed. It also shows that the office market has remained quite stable even during the Corona crisis. According to the study, office rents even rose slightly last year. The IW survey was conducted in the fourth quarter of 2020.
