A kitchen island in the middle of an open kitchen creates a cozy ambience and is also a real eye-catcher. As a central element in the room, a kitchen island is not only intended for preparing food, but also serves as a meeting point for exchanging ideas and getting together. But to ensure that it looks neat and integrates perfectly into the premises, even when commissioned, there are a few things to consider.

In order that the kitchen with a cooking island does not look cluttered, the room should have a minimum size of 15-20 square meters and, if possible, have a square shape. It is important to have a reasonable distance between the cooking island and the kitchen counter. At least 1.20 meters is recommended to ensure not only sufficient room for movement of the cook and guests, but also, for example, drawers can be easily opened on both sides at the same time. The depth of the island should also be well planned. Even if there are no upper limits in terms of size, the depth should not be less than 80 centimeters.

As far as functionality is concerned, there are no limits to the design. For example, stove tops and a sink can be integrated into a cooking island, a dishwasher can also be installed and additional storage space can be created. With modern bar stools, the cooking island is transformed into a seating and dining area with a homely ambience. A kitchen fitter can provide information on whether an extractor hood with exhaust air operation or recirculating air operation is better suited to the individual plans, or whether additional water and power connections and drains need to be installed. Kitchen islands are available in numerous materials and at different prices. On average, costs of at least 4,000 euros can be expected, but mostly they are in a higher price segment.
