Power saving tips in the home office

People who work from home consume more electricity and energy in the household. In order to keep electricity consumption and costs as low as possible, the consumer center's energy advice service has compiled helpful tips. In particular, the use of technical devices such as computers, tablets and printers are among the biggest consumers of electricity.

If possible, a laptop should be used rather than a computer. The latter consumes up to two-thirds less energy. It is important to switch off all devices completely when they are not in use. By using multiple sockets, all devices can be switched off and on again in no time. The router should also be switched off at night. Technical devices in standby mode account for ten percent of electricity consumption. Lighting and heating are two other major electricity consumers. LED and halogen lamps are more energy efficient; electronic heating thermostats help maintain the right room temperature.

During the lunch break, too, attention should be paid to keeping power consumption as low as possible. Since lunch is now prepared at home and not in the canteen, the electricity-saving tips should also be applied in the kitchen. For example, the coffee machine should not run in standby mode and the food should be prepared with fresh ingredients and not frozen food. The reason for this is that it takes longer to heat up the frozen food. Also, the dishwasher should only be started when it is actually full.
