Not only in attic apartments in the summer can be very hot in the apartment. When the sun beats down on the window surface, the heat penetrates the room and temperatures rise rapidly. Sun protection films attached to the windows from the outside can provide relief. Stiftung Warentest tested 11 sun protection films from different manufacturers. The test results are in the "Good" or "Satisfactory" range.
Test results show that windows fitted with solar control film allow only 13 to 20 percent of the sun's rays into the premises. In an attic apartment, this can make a difference of over 20 degrees. This is because while an attic apartment can easily heat up to 56 degrees at the height of summer, the temperature drops to about 34 degrees with the solar control film. This requires a highly reflective film that strongly reflects the sun's rays.
But when using a highly reflective film, there are other things to consider: On slanted windows of an attic apartment that project upward and are not visible to neighbors, they can be applied without any problems. If the windows are across from a neighboring house and the neighbors are affected by the reflective irradiation, this could become problematic. Also, highly reflective solar control films would change the appearance of the house and thus would have to be approved by the landlord. In such cases, less reflective films are more appropriate.
