Climate protection through home office?

The real estate company Catella has published an infographic on the topic of "Climate protection through home offices". For this, observations and developments from 15 months were considered, which put the topic of home office and climate change in context. Looking at the percentage of employed people in 27 countries of the European Union who worked from home in 2020, there was an increase of 122 percent compared to the previous year.

Data from Germany show that 1 in 7 workers, or 13.4 percent of all workers, worked from home in 2020. Before the pandemic, about two-thirds of workers used their cars to get to work. Annual CO2 emissions per capita in Germany are about twice the global average. On the basis of this data, Catella has drawn up a scenario of how CO2 emissions per capita would change if, in future, around 15 percent of the workforce in Germany were to work from their home office once a week. According to the calculations, this scenario could save around 973,529 tons of CO2.

With this infographic, Catella would like to contribute to the discussion on possible measures to save CO2 emissions. The experts at Catella also state that the requirements for real estate will change significantly in the future. Above all, users of residential properties and their usage behavior will become more important. Residential construction measures must also be accelerated in order to be able to live and work sustainably and efficiently as quickly as possible.
